Job Description

Position: CFO 

Location: Hartford, CT area

Salary: $150k plus 30%-40% bonus

Our client is an entrepreneurial industrial holding company run by a couple of Private Equity individuals  with three divisions across the United States. They are seeking a CFO to be a key member of the leadership team as they grow both through acquisition and improved organic execution. They are focused on maximizing their current portfolio of companies, as well as pursuing an aggressive acquisition strategy based on a permanent holding period. This is a very dynamic company with a small core leadership team that operates at a startup pace; as such the ideal candidate will be intellectually curious, self-motivated, and proactive in identifying and solving problems. This position is located in the Hartford, CT area.

They are seeking a CFO that understands strategy and can roll up their sleeves and understand the operational drivers of the business. This individual will also have oversight of the accounting policies and treasury management of their companies. 

 

The CFO will be responsible for driving the company’s financial activities, as well as directing its financial vision to support company operations and drive growth and profitability. The CFO will act as a key thought partner to the CEO and other members of the senior leadership team. More specifically, responsibilities will include the following:

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Support the CEO on executing a strategy of growth and enhanced profitability, ensuring the company has maximized cost savings and revenue opportunities.
  • Participate in the development of strategic and financial plans, especially as they relate to financial integrity and business expansion.
  • Oversee and coordinate the development of the distributed accounting team.
  • Provide leadership and vision on financial issues, including planning, forecasting and operational issues. Must be able to effectively interact with and influence across the organization.
  • Support the CEO and executive management team to assess organizational performance against both the annual budget and company’s long-term strategy.
  • Develop new and enhance existing tools and systems to provide critical financial and operational information to the CEO and make actionable recommendations on both strategy and operations.
  • Participate in key decisions pertaining to strategic initiatives, the operating model and operational execution.
  • Willingness to be hands-on and involved in day to day operations 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven track record with at least five years, experience in senior finance positions and ten years or more of overall experience.
  • Experience working with (preferably integrating) multiple accounting systems
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills
  • Experience in a multi-site, geographically disbursed, manufacturing company environment.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills to inform and influence at all levels internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
  • Base accounting skills
  • Strong grasp of core financial concepts, including accounting, cash management, budgeting, revenue recognition, financial modeling, and forecasting. Have a strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Track record of creating and implementing financial reporting procedures and metrics for an organization. Previous experience creating or significantly improving financial planning and forecasting.
  • Proven ability to provide meaningful proactive analysis that informs business and financial strategy, including providing financial support to sales efforts and contract negotiations.

 

RFEPORTING & CONTROLS

  • Oversee accounting functions and systems including financial statement preparation, leveraging the extended financial team.
  • Oversee daily cash management of the business.
  • Deliver timely and accurate financial statements for CEO and management use.
  • Provide financial reporting to senior lender. 
  •  Enhance and improve the existing reporting processes and systems to ensure disciplined financial and operational reporting to the CEO and senior management. Includes the timely delivery of monthly and interim monthly reporting. 
  • Maintain and improve appropriate internal controls and financial procedures, ensure segregation of duties and take other steps to reinforce integrity, timeliness and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Oversee and review all month-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and corporate/overhead cost allocation.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the Company objectives.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors and manage preparation and support of all external audits & inventory processes.
  • Supervise, develop and support accounting personnel at each subsidiary division.

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT 

  • Drive analyses around operational effectiveness, business performance, and cash management to identify opportunities for improvement. Prioritize financial and operational metrics, assess root causes for issues and possible actions. Implement additional appropriate operating metrics and tracking systems.
  • Quickly establish relationships with other senior members of the management team and be viewed as a key operational leader in the business. Engage in appropriate operational review, discussion and analysis with the management teams.
  • Lead and support the business processes to evaluate strategic pricing opportunities, vendor contracting, procurement savings and analysis of strategic relationships.
  • Lead development and implementation of capital plan, based on alignment with CEO objectives.
  • Maintain a comprehensive, dynamic, forward looking financial model which includes monthly, quarterly, 1 year and 3 year forward dynamic budgets.
  • Evaluate and implement appropriate technology solutions to enhance the financial and operating reporting and operational controls process. Includes appropriate technology infrastructure, including communications, storage and security solutions. 

 

ACQUISITION SUPPORT & INTEGRATION

 

  • Drive the financial processes around acquisitions and ensure the smooth integration thereof. Uncover and drive both short-term and long-term cost savings and revenue opportunities across the organization.
  • Support acquisition activity as required, including, but not limited to, the following: financial due diligence, analysis, coordination, and communication regarding financial policies and procedures.

Job Requirements

STRATEGIC EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience supporting the senior leadership to make strategic decisions. Recognized as an executive that leads by example and is high energy, dynamic, hands-on and team player.
  • Possess balance of collaborative leadership style with a bias for action. 
  • Operational and Deal experience 
  • Experience participating in M&A
  • Have played a key role in the integration of acquired companies.
  • Prior experience managing IT, with specific examples leading software implementations.

 

EDUCATION  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline
  • CPA Preferred
  • MBA or graduate degree in finance highly desirable
